Frequently asked questions

We believe in being open about everything we make. Below are honest answers to the questions we get asked most about our ingredients, sourcing, testing and how to get the best from your routine.

What is ceremonial grade matcha?

Ceremonial grade matcha is a finely milled Japanese green tea powder made to be whisked with water and enjoyed as tea. It is known for its bright green colour, smooth texture and naturally sweet, slightly umami flavour.

What is matcha powder made from?

Matcha powder is made from green tea leaves that are grown in the shade before harvest, then steamed, dried and finely milled. The whole leaf is ground into powder and mixed directly into the drink rather than steeped and removed.

What does ceremonial grade matcha taste like?

Ceremonial grade matcha tastes smooth, fresh and naturally sweet, with a creamy texture and gentle umami flavour. It can also have mild grassy notes, but should not taste harsh when prepared with warm rather than boiling water.

How do you use matcha powder?

Add the matcha powder to a bowl or cup, mix it with a small amount of warm water and whisk until smooth. Top up with more water, or add milk for a hot or iced matcha latte.

How much matcha powder should you use per cup?

Start with about half a teaspoon of matcha powder per cup and adjust to taste. Use a little more for a stronger matcha or latte, and whisk it with a small amount of water first so it mixes smoothly.

Can ceremonial matcha be used for lattes and iced drinks?

Yes. Ceremonial matcha can be whisked with water and enjoyed on its own, or mixed with warm or cold milk for lattes. For an iced drink, whisk it with a little water first, then pour it over ice and add milk.

Does matcha powder contain caffeine?

Yes, matcha naturally contains caffeine because it is made from green tea leaves. The amount varies depending on how much powder you use and how the drink is prepared.

How should matcha powder be stored, and does it expire?

Keep matcha powder tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from heat, light and moisture. Use a dry spoon and close the container after each use. Matcha has a best before date, and its colour and flavour will gradually fade after opening.
